About Lacewing

Drawing inspiration from this beneficial insect, I design functional and beautiful outdoor spaces that encourage you to linger.

Hello and welcome to Lacewing Garden Design. Based in Melbourne, I service the inner south-east of Melbourne and beyond, creating thoughtful outdoor spaces tailored to the people who live in them.

Lacewing Garden Design takes its name from the Green Lacewing — a beautiful and beneficial insect known for helping control pests such as aphids and mites, while also playing an important role as a pollinator. Its presence in the garden is often a sign of a balanced and thriving ecosystem. Like the Lacewing, I believe good design works in harmony with nature.

I create gardens that are both practical and beautiful, designed around your site, lifestyle, budget and the way you want to live outdoors. Whether you’re creating a new garden from scratch, renovating an existing space or reinvigorating what you already have, I offer an end-to-end service — from concept design through to implementation and project management.

I work alongside a trusted network of skilled tradespeople and specialists, including gardeners, hard landscapers, irrigation experts, arborists, horticulturalists and quality plant suppliers. This collaborative approach means every part of your garden is handled with care and expertise, while you benefit from one clear design vision guiding the project from beginning to end.

My designs often focus on gardens that give back as well as look beautiful — including habitat gardens, native and pollinator-friendly gardens, productive and edible gardens, family gardens, and drought-tolerant landscapes suited to Melbourne conditions.

Rather than chasing quick results, I take a thoughtful and practical approach. Through detailed site analysis, iterative design and horticultural knowledge, I create gardens designed not only to look beautiful from day one, but to thrive and evolve over time.

About Sophie

Lacewing Garden Design was founded by Sophie Klein in 2024. Sophie completed her Advanced Certificate in Garden Design with Distinction through the Australian Academy of Garden Design. Her connection to gardens began long before that, having completed her Permaculture Design Certificate in 2008. Since then, she has continued to deepen her knowledge of edible and ornamental gardens, planting design and landscaping through years of hands-on experience.

With a background in social work, music and teaching, Sophie brings creativity, empathy and strong communication to every project. She is known for deep listening, thoughtful problem-solving and creating spaces that feel personal, practical and welcoming.

She is also proud to collaborate with a number of highly skilled women in the industry — professionals whose talent and expertise deserve far more visibility in a traditionally male-dominated field. Together, they deliver thoughtful, high-quality gardens with care, skill and attention to detail.
